Renegade Rebel holds off Ryder Ryder Ryder in Mazarine Stakes
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Renegade Rebel gave trainer Mark Casse his ninth win in the Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine when she beat out her stablemate, Ryder Ryder Ryder, who was probably best in the 1 1/16-mile route for 2-year-old fillies.
Over a speed-favoring Tapeta surface, Renegade Rebel ($4.30) shook loose on the early lead and set moderate fractions with second-choice Honor D Lady chasing her all the way.
Renegade Rebel had a three-length lead until she began to weaken inside the eighth pole. Ryder Ryder Ryder, who broke in the air, came charging on the outside to finish a neck back in second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Honor D Lady. State of Mind and Collect Dattt completed the order of finish.
The final time was 1:44.80.
Rafael Hernandez rode Renegade Rebel, who was coming off a seven-length maiden victory in her first start around two turns.
“Last time, she was rank and she still won,” Hernandez said. “Today, she relaxed really good. When the other ones were coming, it looked like she was kind of waiting. After the wire, I couldn’t pull her up.”
By classic winner Nyquist, Renegade Rebel banked $90,000 of the $150,900 purse in her stakes debut for D.J Stable.
